Library Curriculum

Welcome to our Library Curriculum page! Learn how our library supports Preschool through 8th-grade students with reading programs, internet safety lessons, and engaging activities like the Battle of the Books. Explore below for details on book checkout, typing lessons, and more!

Library Curriculum Overview

All students from Preschool through 8th grade have a designated library class time each week.

Book Checkout and Returns

Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade check out books on a weekly basis. Books are due back on their class’s designated library day. Students may renew a book for an additional week without returning it. However, after two weeks, the book must be brought back to the library. If no other student has placed the book on hold, it can be rechecked for additional time.

Overdue notices are sent at the beginning of each month. In the case of a missing book, students have three options:

  1. Find the book.

  2. Replace the book.

  3. Pay the fine.

Checkout limits by grade:

  • Kindergarten/1st grade: 1 book or backpack

  • 2nd grade: 2 books or 1 book/1 backpack

  • 3rd grade: 3 books or 2 books/1 backpack

  • 4th-8th grade: 4 books

Internet Safety Lessons

All students receive internet safety lessons through a variety of programs. Commonly used resources include Common Sense Media and the FBI Internet Safety Course to teach online safety and responsible behavior.

Monthly Focus Lessons

Library lessons often align with the national focus for the month. For instance, 1-2 lessons per grade level may feature a book that helps students learn about different cultures, groups, or important historical figures. Examples include Women’s History Month, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Filipino American History Month, and special holidays.

Washington Library Association Children’s Choice Awards

Primary and intermediate students benefit from the Washington Library Association (WLA) Children’s Choice Award picture books. These books are nominated by teachers and librarians statewide, with a selection chosen as favorites each year. Saint George School purchases the WLA Children’s Choice books annually, providing engaging, current picture books for read-aloud sessions with Preschool through 5th-grade students. These books are also available for checkout.

Battle of the Books

The library supports the Battle of the Books competition, which involves local Catholic schools. There are two levels:

  • Intermediate (4th-6th grade)

  • Middle School (6th-8th grade)

This year, the 4th and 5th graders form the intermediate team, while the 6th-8th graders participate on the middle school team. Books are selected by Diocese librarians from the Sasquatch Award list, ensuring that the competition features current, engaging, and diverse reading selections that reflect the student population.

Typing Lessons

Students in grades 3-8 practice typing once a month during their library class. They use platforms such as Typing.com or NitroType to hone their skills, with structured time provided for practice, including guidance on proper posture and hand placement.

Library Grading (4th-8th Grade)

Students in grades 4-8 receive grades for their library activities. Typical assignments include short journal entries related to read-aloud books or brief partner/group activities. Every effort is made to ensure that students have enough time to complete these assignments during class.
