Mr. Michael “Coach” McKenzie
Gym Teacher
My history with athletics is extremely broad. I have worked with the Seattle Parks Department track and basketball through six community centers including A.A.U girls and boys programs 5th through 12th grade. I have been involved with college viewing tournaments and games in Los Angeles, Reno and Las Vegas.

I have coached club soccer as an assistant, CYO basketball, track and cross country 3rd through.8th grade. I was the Athletic director for 4 years at St Edward School and won the CYO coach of the year.
As a P.E. teacher, I use team building games to build a healthy environment. I choose a variety of activities, games and sports that don’t necessarily require athleticism or competition. I try to find out what brings each class joy and energy. I start each class with a warm up jog and floor exercises.

In addition I teach World drum, African drums and drum rudiments in our After Care program. I teach using the drum rudiments as the basic foundation. Drum sticks accomplish this with less fatigue than hand drumming. Sticking is faster and the speed and agility allows one to transfer to hand drum with maybe more creativity. Hand drums require more touch and feel. That’s the challenge: teaching them the feel.
