Within the 242 pages of Diane Ravitch’s lightning rod of a book, “The Death and Life of the Great
American School System,” there appear exactly three references to Catholic education. Which makes
sense, given that Ms. Ravitch is addressing and deploring recent efforts to reform public schools
with extensive testing and increasing privatization.
Yet what subtly informs both her critique and her recommendations for improving public schools is,
in significant measure, her long study of and admiration for Roman Catholic education, especially in
serving low-income black and Hispanic students.
In that respect, Ms. Ravitch and her book offer evidence of how some public-education scholars and
reformers have been learning from what Catholic education is doing right. What one might call the

Formspring.me, a relatively new social networking site, has become a magnet for comments, many of them
nasty and sexual, among the Facebook generation.
While Formspring is still under the radar of many parents and guidance counselors, over the last two
months it has become an obsession for thousands of teenagers nationwide, a place to trade comments and
questions like: Are you still friends with julia? Why wasn’t sam invited to lauren’s party?

The St. George track team is made up of about 40 student athletes who represent our school, competing
against all of the other CYO teams throughout our 2 month season. Unlike many other school's, our
school does not have Track uniforms. Most of the other schools have track uniforms while we wear our
St. George first Friday T-shirts to the meets. Please help our team get uniforms by subscribing to the
ESPN magazine by filling out the order form below and returning it to the office with a check or cash
for $40.00. Thanks!
Please, please, take more care at drop-off and pick-up times. Remember to DRIVE SLOWLY ON 13TH, drop-off
or pick-up your child, and then DRIVE SLOWLY, STOP AT THE CROSSWALK UNTIL IT IS CLEAR AND DRIVE SLOWLY
away from the school. DO NOT STOP IN THE CROSSWALK to pick up or drop-off student. If you let your child
out of the east side of the street, be sure to bring them to the crosswalk. You are setting an example
for the children; you are the foremost educators, so please model safety and courtesy on the street.
Last Sunday, Miss Andersen and I had
the honor of attending the district awards ceremony at Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 4137.
Once again, St. George students excelled. Lillian Le, grade 4 took first place in post and second place in
district; Alexa Tonel, grade 5 placed first post and received honorable mention in the district; Emma Jensen,
grade 6 placed first in post and third in district, and Rahel Nuguse, grade 7 was first in post and second in
the district.
At Monday's assembly, representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Priscilla Del Rosario
and Mar Murillo presented so many students in grades four, five, six, seven and eight with honorable mention
certificates and awards for their essay writing. Congratulations to the students, their teachers
and you, their encouraging parents.
